An Analog State of Mind

Some forms of nostalgia I have always had a soft spot for, maybe that is why my hair went grey :)  Last year my experience using a rangefinder started to pique my interest in the possibility of using film.  In photography film has a nostalgic feeling to it for me.  I love having to do everything manual with the camera, it engages the brain so much more in my photography because you have to do the thinking for the camera instead of the other way around.  Sure you can do all this with digital but it is just so easy to turn on some auto features :)  So when I started talking about using film, my friend Tony graciously lent me his Minolta XD-7 and 28mm lens to start playing with last fall.

The funny thing is the first day Tony and I went out shooting film, I spent the whole day shooting only until did we realize that the camera had no film in it.  I still to this day remember in my mind the some of the shots I took that will never be.  I always make sure the camera has film in it :)

One other benefit people often talk about with using film is you take better pictures because you don't take as many photos.  Each time you push the shutter it costs money to use a frame of the film and the developing, whereas after the initial investment in digital it is free.  I do understand the methodology with the film and do notice I take much less photos.  But with that said it is much harder to experiment because it is costing money.  Some of my biggest development in photography has come from experimentation.

So I do have a soft spot for film, but I think only in conjunction with digital right now in my photography development.  Here are some of my favorite shots from my first 2 rolls of film.  I have 2 more on the go right now so I will share those when I am finished with the roll.  Next up, learning to develop!
