Note: This is not my usual post reflections but it was pretty powerful reflection and I thought I would share it with you all. I hope you enjoy
As human’s, one of our most natural instincts is retatialitation after we are hurt. But how many times have we all heard growing up as children, “be the bigger person”. From a very early age we are being taught to ignore and overcome this urge for retaliation.
Yesterday while driving home from the passport office I was listening to the version of “Imagine” sung by Eva Cassidy and it got me reflecting on this most natural of instincts as it relates to recent world events, the death of Osama Bin Laden. If there is any topic/discussion that will polarize your ethics and morals it is this.
From one standpoint justice has finally delivered for the horrible events that took place on September 11, 2001 and all the lives lost since. For many, including those that lost loved ones in this tragedy, this must finally bring a bit of solace, comfort, and closure. This is the root that drives our need for retaliation isn't it? To bring comfort and closure to our own circumstances?
But I ask what really did the death of Osama Bin Laden achieve, other than just one more death in this seemingly ever lasting battle between Western and Middle Eastern cultures? Lets not be naive to think that with this death the battle between the two cultures will be over and the "war" of terror is finished. Instead, did his death just potentially make it worse? How many more lives are going to be lost when Bin Laden’s followers give in to their basic needs for retaliation? Will we retaliate once again after their retaliation? When will it stop, or will it?
As I was getting lost in my reflection and listening to the beautiful lyrics of the song I was reminded of the powerful words of Martin Luther King Jr.
"I mourn the loss of thousands of precious lives, but I will not rejoice in the death of one, not even an enemy. Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that."
We grow up being taught to be the “bigger person” and overcome our urges for retaliation but somewhere along the way that lesson seems to be lost. There has been over $1 trillion dollars spent on the retaliatory “war” on terror. Let me repeat that, $1 trillion dollars. Now imagine if that money was spent towards building relationships between the two cultures so that there is understanding and love instead retaliation and hatred, what a different world that would be.
Let me leave you with the epic words of John Lennon that actually inspired this reflection for me:
“Imagine there’s no countries
It isn’t hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
living life in peace
you may say that i’m a dreamer,
but I’m not the only one.
I hope that someday you will join me
and the world will live as one.”
Remember “Hate cannot drive out hate”, lets get back to the lessons of being the bigger person we learnt as children, try to make this a better place to live.
