Friday Forum - Change the Way You Look at the World

A few months ago we used to have a sunday discussion where I would provide something thought provoking and some initial thoughts and we would discuss together in the comments.  I found great value in those discussion and would like to restart that series.

This marks the inaugural Friday Forum.  For each forum I will provide a beautiful picture, a thought provoking quote, and some initial thoughts.  From there we can go on to discuss our thoughts on the subject in the commenting section.  Again anonymous comments are completely acceptable if you want, or if you email me I will add your thoughts to the comment thread.  These were a lot of fun so I am excited for them to be here again.

I have chosen this quote and photography specifically to start the Friday Forums up again because I find it so powerful and resonates so closely to my heart.  I can speak to its validicy because I am a living example of its truth.

When I first got diagnosed the way I looked at things sure changed, and changed quickly.  But a real major change didn't occur in me until I took up my street photography.  This genre has changed the way I looked at things on two occasions.

First when I first started all I cared about was street and candid moments in nature.  This resulted in a lot of forced street shots and birds in action.  I had no interest in things like flowers, I was always of the mindset "Leave them for the macro guys"

This philosphy didn't jive with my core for very long, it wasn't inline with who I am.  I am not someone who forces things, I go with the flow and look for the best outcome I can with what I have.  This is when my real change happened.  My photography started no longer following the rigor of having to produce candid moments but focused on capturing beauty.  I began looking at the world around me and seeing the beauty in it.  This has gone a long way to help me make much more powerful street photographs in the genre I love, but it has also expanded my eyes as well.  Flowers are beautiful and I love capurting their beauty now too.

So much so that this past week I got more keeper shots of flowers than I did for my bigger passion of street shots.  By opening our minds to a more eccletic view of the world, we will see things we didn't before and be amazing at the beauty around us.
